What to Wear to Your First Pole Class
A Complete Beginner’s Guide
Walking into your first pole dancing class is exciting—whether you’re there for fitness, fun, or confidence building. But one question almost everyone has before they start is: What do you actually wear to a pole class?
Good news: you don’t need fancy outfits or anything intimidating. You just need clothes that help you feel comfortable, confident, and safe while learning new movements.
In this guide, we’ll break down exactly what to wear to your first pole class at BodySpace Studios, what to avoid, and how to prep like a pro.
Why What You Wear Matters in Pole
Pole fitness involves climbing, gripping, spinning, and using different parts of your body to hold the pole. Skin contact is your friend—it helps you stay secure and prevents slipping. That’s why pole outfits tend to look a little different from other gym gear, especially as you progress.
For beginners, you don't need to bare a lot of skin yet. But choosing the right outfit will help you feel more comfortable and successful from day one.
What to Wear to Your First Pole Class
1. A Comfortable Sports Bra or Supportive Top
Choose a top that:
Offers good support
Stays in place during inverted or overhead movements
Allows your arms and shoulders to move freely
Most beginners do great with a simple sports bra or fitted athletic tank.
Skip: super loose tops—they can ride up or get caught.
2. Shorts That Allow Leg Grip
Shorts are the go‑to for pole because your legs often grip the pole during climbs and sits. For your first class, choose:
Regular athletic shorts
Biker shorts
Pole‑specific shorts (optional but not necessary early on)
As you progress, you may prefer shorter styles for better grip—but there’s no pressure to start there.
Avoid: leggings or long pants. They prevent leg grip, which makes learning moves harder.
3. Bare Feet (No Shoes Needed!)
Most beginner pole classes are done barefoot. It:
Helps your balance
Strengthens foot muscles
Makes movement more natural
You’ll see many of our students and coaches wearing Pole heels. We’ll teach you how to utilise these in time and are not needed for your first class, unless it’s specifically labelled as a heels class.
4. Optional Layers
Bring:
A warm top or hoodie for warm‑up
Socks
Knee pads if the studio recommends them for floorwork
These extras help you stay comfortable and prevent soreness.
What Not to Wear to Pole Class
❌ Lotions or Oils
They make your skin slippery and can be dangerous. Avoid applying lotions the day of your class.
❌ Jewelry
Rings, bracelets, and necklaces can scratch the pole or your skin.
❌ Baggy Clothing
It can get in the way and make moves harder to learn.
What Should You Bring?
Pack:
A water bottle
Grip aid (optional for beginners—your instructor can recommend a type as we sell these in-house)
A small towel
A positive attitude and curiosity!
